What is refraction?

Refraction refers to how light waves are bent as they pass through your cornea and lens. A refraction assessment helps your doctor determine a corrective lens prescription that will give you the sharpest vision. If you don't need corrective lenses, you won't have a refraction assessment.

Your doctor may use a computerized refractor to measure your eyes and estimate the prescription you need to correct a refractive error. He or she may use a technique called retinoscopy. In this procedure the doctor shines a light into your eye and measures the refractive error by evaluating the movement of the light reflected by your retina.

Your eye doctor fine-tunes this refraction assessment by asking you to look through a Phoroptor, a mask-like device that contains wheels of different lenses, and judge which combination gives you the sharpest vision. By repeating this step several times, your doctor finds the lenses that give you the greatest possible acuity.

We offer single vision lenses, bifocals, and progressives with your choice of plastic, polycarbonate, or hi-index lenses.

Our Optician can help you determine what types of lenses will suit you best in terms of comfort, function, and design. We are happy to help you find the lens that best suits your lifestyle and personal needs by selecting eyewear that looks and feels great!

We offer Quality sunwear that provides 100 percent UV protection and can significantly reduce the risk of vision problems caused by sunlight such as cataracts and retinal damage.

Polarized lenses are a bit darker than tinted sunglasses, making objects look crisper and clearer. Details are also easier to see, which helps to reduce squinting, eye fatigue, and eyestrain. We carry a wide assortment of fashionable, prescription and non-prescription sunglasses, including Salvatore Ferragamo, Michael Kors, Georgio Armani, Nike and Ray Ban.

Ortho-K

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is an optical correction using 'reverse geometry' rigid gas permeable contact lenses for corneal reshaping in low-to-moderate degree of myopia (nearsightedness) control. It has shown in many studies to be effective in slowing down myopia progression and the elongation of eyeball length in children. At Bay Eye Care Institute, specialized rigid gas permeable lenses that are FDA approved since 2002 for corneal reshaping during overnight wear up to myopia -6.00D are used for ortho-K therapy. The vast majority of cases following the removal of contact lenses can achieve up to visual acuity of up to 20/20 or at least 20/30 or better depending on individual pre-treatment RX.

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are thin, clear disks of plastic that float on the surface of the eye. They correct vision like eyeglasses do for myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia, and are safe when used with care. Contact lenses are fitted by our doctors base on patients' individual needs. We carry a variety of brands such as Acuve, CooperVision, and AirOptix.
